At Smartt Strategies, we approach team development as real work—not abstract theory or one-size-fits-all training. Our facilitation is designed to help intact teams understand how they work together, surface what’s getting in the way, and apply insight directly to the challenges they face.
We believe meaningful change happens when teams are given the structure, language, and space to examine their own dynamics and take ownership of how they move forward.
Our Belbin-Centric Focus
Belbin® Team Roles is the core methodology and exclusive focus of our leadership and team development work. We use Belbin as a team system—one that explains how effective teams function through the balance of distinct, complementary contributions.
Belbin is an evidence-based framework that identifies nine essential Team Role contributions required for a team to perform at its best. These contributions—ranging from idea generation and momentum-building to relationship-strengthening and quality assurance—work together as an integrated system. Sustainable team effectiveness depends not on any single role, but on the presence, balance, and effective use of all nine Team Roles.
Rather than measuring personality or style, Belbin focuses on observable behavior in a team context and how those behaviors interact. This systems view allows teams to see where strengths are well covered, where gaps or overloads exist, and how behavioral risks can impact performance.
At Smartt Strategies, Belbin is not one tool among many. It is the primary lens we use for:
Leadership Development Training
Team Development and Team Facilitation
Understanding collective strengths, gaps, risks, and leadership contributions
This focused, systems-based approach creates clarity, consistency, and depth—helping teams and leaders build real capability rather than navigating multiple, competing models.
Focused on Real Teams and Real Work
Smartt Strategies works with intact teams—groups of people who depend on one another to deliver results. Facilitation centers on the team’s actual work, challenges, and relationships rather than hypothetical scenarios or generic examples.
By grounding Belbin-based leadership and team development in real team experiences, participants connect insight directly to their day-to-day responsibilities. Learning is relevant, meaningful, and immediately applicable.
Experiential Learning That Builds Capability
Our approach emphasizes experiential learning, reflection, and dialogue. Participants actively engage in Belbin-based activities and facilitated conversations that allow them to test assumptions, explore different perspectives, and deepen their understanding of how teams function.
Rather than telling teams how they should work, we create structured opportunities for participants to discover what works best for their team—and how they can lead more effectively within it.
Clarity, Growth, and Lasting Impact
Smartt Strategies’ facilitation is designed to help participants leave with clarity about their roles, confidence in their contributions, and a stronger understanding of how leadership shows up within teams.
Teams leave with:
A shared Belbin-based language for discussing behavior and leadership
Greater awareness of collective strengths and gaps
Improved working relationships
Practical insight they can apply immediately
The result is not only improved team performance, but participants who are better equipped to contribute and lead moving forward.
